- May 25, 2017 · A May 12 kiteboarding accident at Robert W. Crown Memorial State Beach took the life of Brett Spence Powell, 57, of Fairfax. Witnesses said that the accident happened about 4 p.m. The wind lifted the victim some 50 feet off the water. He lost control of his rig and crashed into an electrical box. Paramedics transported Powell to Highland Hospital in Oakland.
