First, BI doesn't have any real beaches, so you have to launch off razor sharp lava rocks. Second, the Kona side of the island is in the Lee of two 14,000 foot volcanos, so the only winds Kona gets are winter storms and thermals.

Feb 15, 2007 · Bottom line, I wouldn't focus on kiting when visiting the Big Island. There is so much more to see and do that is unique to the place. Save the kiting for Maui if you can make it over there and if the trades are kicking.

Jan 21, 2007 · Kitesurfing on Big Island is only for experienced kiters with local knowledge. There really aren't any good or even decent launches there. As Rick said, prevailing winds are trades from the NE which is off shore for the entire W coast of the island (Kailua-Kona, Kohala, etc.).
