Fins are a lot like a boat's rudder in that their placement keeps the board moving in a controlled, forward manner, which is the way you want it to move. Without the fins, the wakeboard would be much more likely to wildly and freely rotate on the water's surface, which would make riding the board, let alone attempting tricks, extremely difficult.
The shape of the fins on your wakeboard as well as their length and depth will have a big impact on the feel of the ride. Bigger fins will give you more control of the board in rough waters, but that extra control may hold you back if you plan to ride the obstacles at your local cable park.

Nose Fins: What Are They For? Nose fins are commonly found on skim style wakesurf boards. The fins are designed to help give the rider control while riding switch after performing a skim trick such as a pop shuvit or 180. Nose fins typically look more similar to a wakeboard fin than a wakesurf fin.
